On December 27, 2005, in the capital city of Elista, Kalmykia, a new Buddhist temple was dedicated to all the Buddhist and Kalmyk people. The Geden Sheddup Choi Corling Monastery will be known as the largest Buddhist temple in all of Europe and it will be a place of worship and a great source of pride for all Buddhists and Kalmyks all over the world.
Our Kalmyk reincarnate lama, Telo Tulku Rinpoche, also known as Erdne Ombadykow, has given his blessing to our proposed donation of two butter lamps (Zuls) that will sit under a 30’ tall (9 meters) statue of the Buddha. These butter lamps will stand approximately 12” tall and 8” wide and will be made of silver. They are handmade and can burn for one week at a time.
An inscription will be engraved on these Zuls: “To all Buddhists and to the people of Kalmykia, From the Kalmyks of America” in Kalmyk, Russian and English. A short prayer will also be inscribed, which has yet to be determined.
The cost of these two Zuls is $2500 USD, not including packaging, shipping, customs and insurance. The anticipated sum that we will need to raise is approximately $3200USD. Any monies that we raise above and beyond the actual cost of the Zuls, plus shipping, will go toward the purchase of prayer books that the Rinpoche has also said are needed at the temple. Our plan is to present the Zuls to the Rinpoche in Elista sometime in Spring/Summer 2006.
The Kalmyk Brotherhood Society is asking for your help and donations to purchase these wonderful Zuls for the largest and most beautiful Buddhist temple in all of Europe.
